Your relationship with a solar company lasts 25 years, so support is everything. With Polaron, the experience of getting help seems to depend entirely on whether you've signed the contract yet.
Before you sign: Communication is fast. You're a priority. Texts, emails, and calls are returned quickly.
After you sign: This is where the story changes for many customers. Non-urgent questions can take 48-72 hours for a reply. For a technical problem, like an inverter fault, homeowners report waiting days to hear from a project manager. The root of the problem seems to be their national, centralized support system. A technical issue in Lunenburg gets filtered through an office in Ontario, creating frustrating delays and communication gaps. When problems do arise post-installation, some customers describe being caught between Polaron's head office and the local subcontractor, each pointing fingers at the other.
The True Cost of "$0 Down" Financing
This is the most important section of this review. The "$0 down" model isn't free; it's a specific type of financing with significant financial implications.
The "Convenience" Premium
I analyzed several Polaron quotes against those from local installers for a typical 10 kW system in Nova Scotia. The numbers speak for themselves.
Metric
Local Installer (Cash Purchase)
Polaron Solar (Financed)
The Bottom Line
System Cost
~$25,000
~$38,000 (Total over loan term)
You pay $13,000+ extra.
Cost per Watt
~$2.50/watt
~$3.80/watt
The rate is over 50% higher.
Payback Period (Post-Rebates)
8-10 years
15-20 years (or length of loan)
Takes twice as long to break even.
Key Takeaway: You are paying a premium of 40-60% for the convenience of having Polaron bundle the hardware, installation, and loan into one package. Be aware of the hidden costs of going solar in Nova Scotia.
How the Financing Works
Polaron connects you with a lender for a long-term contract, often 15-25 years. This isn't a simple loan. The financing company often technically owns the system on your roof. Many contracts include a yearly payment "escalator" of around 2.9%. The idea is that this is less than electricity rates will rise, but if NSP rates stay flat one year, your solar payment will still go up.
Tip for Financing: Don't just look at the monthly payment. Ask for the "Amortization Schedule" and the "Total Cost of Borrowing." These documents reveal the true, total price you will pay over the life of the agreement.
Equipment and Performance
The hardware on your roof needs to be solid. Polaron uses reliable, Tier 1 equipment—think brands like LONGi or Jinko for panels and Sungrow for inverters. These are the workhorses of the industry: not premium, but dependable. The systems are designed to cover 80-100% of your power bill and, once operational, they generally perform as promised. You get a monitoring app to track your production in real-time, which is a standard and useful feature.
Adding a battery like a Tesla Powerwall is an option for outage protection, but it will add a hefty $15,000 - $20,000 to your total financed cost, dramatically changing the financial equation.
Installation Timeline & Process
The on-site installation crews, often local subcontractors, are typically professional. The frustrations that arise are usually with the timeline and communication from the head office.
The Journey from Signature to "On"
Here's a realistic timeline based on customer experiences:
Month 1: Contract, site survey, engineering.
Months 2-3: The long wait. Permit applications with your municipality and the interconnection application with Nova Scotia Power.
Month 4: Installation is scheduled and completed (usually 1-3 days).
Month 4-5+: Final inspections and waiting for the final "Permission to Operate" (PTO) from NSP.
Total average time:3.5 to 5 months. Polaron does handle all the paperwork, which is a definite plus. The main complaint is a lack of proactive updates during the waiting periods.
Contract Transparency: Read This Carefully
This is where you need to pay the most attention. The complexity of the contract can hide major implications and is a key reason to be wary of potential solar panel scams in Canada.
The Lien on Your Home
Polaron's financing partners use a Notice of Security Interest (NOSI) or PPSA registration. This acts like a lien on your property. It means the solar system is registered on your home's title. This can seriously complicate selling or refinancing your home. To clear the title, a new buyer must agree to take over the contract, or you must pay out the entire remaining loan balance, which can be thousands of dollars.
Cancellation Policy
After the 10-day cooling-off period, cancelling the contract is brutally expensive. The penalty is often 15-25% of the total contract value. On a $38,000 system, that’s a potential cancellation fee of over $9,000.
A Real-World Example: I consulted with a family near the Annapolis Valley two years after their install. When they went to sell their home, they were blindsided by the lien. The loan payout was almost the same as the initial amount because the interest was front-loaded. They had to sacrifice a large chunk of their home equity to close the sale. It was a painful financial lesson.
Final Thoughts: Should You Choose Polaron?
Polaron successfully installs working solar systems for people who can't pay the upfront cost. They use decent equipment and handle the complex Nova Scotia solar rebate paperwork.
However, their model has significant downsides: a much higher total cost, a binding long-term contract that encumbers your property title, and a customer service system that many find lacking after the sale.
Who is this model for?
A homeowner with high energy bills who has zero access to other financing (cash, HELOC, personal loan).
Someone who plans to stay in their home for the full 25-year term of the contract.
Who should be cautious?
Anyone who can secure their own financing or pay cash. You will save tens of thousands of dollars by going with a local installer.
Anyone who might sell their home within the next 10-15 years.
Your 3-Step Vetting Process
If you're considering Polaron, protect yourself by following these steps:
Get Competing Quotes: Get at least two other quotes from local Nova Scotia installers for a cash purchase. This will reveal the true premium you're being asked to pay.
Demand the Documents: Ask for the Amortization Schedule and the Total Cost of Borrowing. See the full financial picture, not just the monthly payment.
Get a Legal Review: Before you sign anything, invest a few hundred dollars to have a real estate lawyer review the contract. Ask them specifically about the implications of the NOSI/lien and the process for selling your home.
The appeal of "$0 down" is strong, but true savings come from understanding the total cost of ownership.
We chose solar ascent to install our solar panels. The process was incredibly easy. They helped with the financing options also. Their solar edge app needs to be upgraded because it shows the actual power generated by the system, however it does not show further details on how much of energy was consumed by the house before sending it to the grid. Hence there will be always a difference in the figures that you see in the solar edge app and the NSPower bill. There are other competitors in the same market who provides more precise information about the consumption.

Almost two years ago now, we contacted three solar panel installation companies for information and quotes regarding our desire to access solar energy in our 1883 South Shore home. After in-depth conversations with all three, our choice became obvious to us as the Solar Ascent quote was certainly competitive, sales staff interaction was easy and informative and the company was local! Our confidence in Solar Ascent was not misplaced. From first conversations to final installation in April of 2024, we interacted with their competent staff who seemed to genuinely care about their role in the renewable energy industry. The installation was completed in two separate days, between NS Power inspections, and from on-site staff safety briefings to final cleanup, the installation crew was professional and thorough. One year later, we are enjoying our solar production and have virtually eliminated power bills. Our ability to watch the production, in real time, on the Solar Edge app is slightly addictive but a great way to monitor the process. Cheers to Solar Ascent for a great job done! One year later the team sent a notice that our actual production was 3.5% more than the original estimate. Great service and follow up! Thanks again, David The Solar Ascent team did an amazing job. The communication from the project manager was timely, clear, informative and responsive to our questions. The installation team for the racking and the panels were efficient, respectful, clean and thorough. They worked with all appropriate safety equipment and were properly staffed. All arrangements with NSP went without a hitch. The system was installed very quickly. A wonderful company to work with!

Solar Ascent's plan was simple. The loan structure in Nova Scotia is NOT, but the team made it easy to navigate. The installers were courteous and knowledgeable. I work in construction and was happy to see that they were also very safe.

Solar Ascent was a great choice for our solar installation. They helped us navigate the different financing options. They clearly explained the project and set realistic expectations for the timeline and the output from the solar panels. Andrew, Morgaine, and our fantastic install guys were professional and friendly. Morgaine answered about a thousand questions from me with patience. We had zero issues passing the NSP inspection and the install looks clean inside and out. It was an excellent experience.

Solar Ascent was very friendly and professional, helping us every step of the way as we learned about solar energy for our house. They helped us with signing up for rebates, both provincial and federal. Our new panels work great and have made a huge difference in our electricity bill. The app tells how much each panel is producing and/or sending to the grid. I would highly recommend this company.
